About

Study In Action is a new initiative from the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (nspirg.org).

Broadly,

Study In Action (SIA) works toward building bridges between Halifax’s universities and the wider community through collaborative research on social and environmental justice issues. Our aim is to support progressive grassroots groups who have research or design needs in order to better provide services and advocacy for the communities they represent. SIA does this by outreaching to university students, networking with faculty, and facilitating research partnerships with community.

Specifically,

This website is a hub for those relationships.
On the Projects page you will find a database of project proposals that have come from Halifax’s community groups. This is SIA’s first term of operations yet there is already an interesting variety of projects. The database will only grow as SIA continues. The proposals are invitations to students to make their coursework more meaningful by partnering with community groups on specific projects. The proposals have been designed to be able to fit into various areas of the undergraduate curriculum. SIA helps students arrange with their professor to receive credit for their work on an SIA project. The proposals are flexible in order to meet the desires of both students and community groups. They vary in type from a simple suggestion to an invitation to collaborate. A suggestion is meant to simply inspire a student in a certain direction. Where they take that suggestion is up to them. Regardless, the final product will likely be of interest to the community group that made the initial suggestion. Collaborations are for students and organizations that are ready to make a greater commitment to each other and the project. These are exciting learning processes that can form lasting working relationships.
The For Organizations page provides specific information and resources for Halifax’s grassroots groups interested in putting SIA to work. The For The Students page provides similar material for students curious about using or getting involved in SIA.
